“WHAT is this thing on my head?!?” Olivia was not impressed with the idea of a helmet on her head. And yes - that was the “toddler” size, the smallest one at the store. (No - she isn’t riding a bike yet. But when our little ones are on toddler ride on toys outside, we make sure their sweet heads are protected.) Thanks to Uisce for creating Wordless Wednesday. Did you know that 1 in 10 teenagers have abused cough medicine? Does that sound ridiculous? It did to me… But overdosing on cough medicine is happening everywhere… Is your child one of the 2.4 million who has tried it? “Cough medicine abuse involves taking an extreme amount of cough medicine–bottle after bottle or pills after pills–to get high. The “high” is caused by dextromethorphan (DXM), a common ingredient found in many cough medicines. DXM is a safe and effective ingredient [...]

I got an interesting question in the mail:"I am not very familiar with your website but I came across an article you wrote about the increase in violence in cinema while doing research for a paper I have to do. I found the article very interesting and was wondering if I may ask a question to you. I am a student at the University of Notre Dame and am writing a paper dealing with violence in movies. Specifically, if violence in [...]

As the dust settles on cabinet appointments and the administration rounds itself out, all eyes are starting to focus on the first 100 days of the Obama presidency. While the pundits predict, one issue will certainly take precedent in the first 100 days: the economy. Even Karl Rove agrees. So if the economy is #1 on the list...what falls to #2 or even #3...or is there even room for anything else? Cue the internet which has no shortage of bloggers recommending [...]

This could have been a post about terror, or hatred. It could have been a post about international politics and religion. But for the sake of my own spirit's health, it is a post about two women facing the news of a tragedy across an ocean and across thousands of miles. A number of years ago (long story) I hired a "prayer agent" in Israel. I actually paid someone to pray for me at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. The proceeds [...]

Longtime DT reader Buck sends word that infants and kids may have a rough go of it at Obama's inauguration next month. The US Capitol Police have banned baby strollers, backpacks, thermoses and large bags from the secured audience area around the Capitol during the swearing-in ceremony. Then there's this:Direct questions regarding the admittance of items required for child care to the U.S. Capitol Police at 202-512-1226. I wish I could forget how much I despise Ayn Rand. Things just published this excerpt from a 1971 collection of essays called, The New Left: The Anti-Industrial Revolutionwhere she tried to paint a horrific view of the world if the Indian tear-wiping, pollution-hating tree-hugging hippies took over:Your wife gets up at six A.M - you have insisted that she sleep until the coal furnace, which you lighted, has warmed the house a little. She has to cook breakfast for your [...]

A badge on its website describes Twittermoms as "the online version of the three martini playdate," and I think that may be true in that you have to be there to catch the madness. This new group, and I do mean new, boasts more than 4900 members, and was started only a few months ago in September by young mom and Twitter fan Megan Calhoun. When I say you have to be there to catch the madness, I mean that Twittermoms [...]

There's something bittersweet about turning in your old passport. Of course there's the requisite nostalgia that bubbles up as you thumb through the worn pages, suddenly recalling the Mexican restaurant with the killer salsa made tableside, or the Olympic stadium in Sarajevo turned hastily created cemetery during the war. You remember the painstaking days spent simply memorizing the Turkish word

He watches her first from afar. She runs to the swings and Archer's eyes follow. He kicks the sand and looks back at me and then out at her. He waits for her to notice him but she's too busy climbing the ladder to the slide. Up she climbs and down she goes and Archer continues watching. He watches until he becomes self-conscious and looks back at me. I'm watching him and he knows it. Gives me a look like, "stop [...]

Just so no one can say I don’t print the negative comments, here’s one fresh from my inbox:All I can say is...wow. Self-absorption is built in to the very fabric of mommy blogs, but you take it to new heights. I was trying to figure out if your incessant bragging about yourself and how smart and wonderful everyone thinks you are comes from arrogance, or if it’s coming from a place of insecurity. On a more positive note, you have very [...]

Despite the fact that they don't exist, Pete from Jalopnik just bought a Ford Taurus SHO Wagon on eBay for three thousand measly bucks. At least I can console myself that it was a 1992, and not the awesomer-looking, beanier-shaped Gen III Taurus from '96-99. I am nonetheless adding the Audi S8 Avant to my saved searches. Because eBay is more magical than Santa Claus. Ford Taurus SHO Wagon pops up on eBay [jalopnik] Previously: SHO me the Ford Taurus [...]

Last month we asked you, our lovely readers, to help us find some families who could use some help this Christmas season. We were flooded with responses from so many of you and touched by your desire to help. As we have been reading over the nominations, we have been moved, sometimes to tears, by the stories of so many parents persevering through some very difficult times. We are still narrowing down the families and wish that we were able [...]

When my son was first born, my sister-in-law's family was living with us and she watched Jared while my wife and I worked. Now, my mother-in-law watches our kids two days a week for us. It's December second, which means that the holidays are NOT HERE YET thankyouverymuch. You have PLENTY of time to finish your shopping (or start! if you're like me). You also have plenty of time to get ready for that New Year's party you go to every year, the one where everyone comes all dressed up and looking great. The one that you always rush into feeling frazzled and disappointed by your outfit and your hair and your lipstick. THAT party. [...]

TW and I have been looking at the kids' Kaboodle wishlists and looking at our holiday budget and trying to come up with the best gifts to purchase (or ask Santa to bring.
