Filed under: Teens & tweens, Weird but true, EducationIn most high schools, senior pranks are par for the course. Every year, graduating classes across the country try to top their predecessors with the most outrageous stunts they can come up with. Most pranks are harmless enough, but even those can get you in trouble.19-year-old Calvin Morett had what I'm sure he thought was a great idea for a harmless prank for this year's Saratoga Springs High School graduation ceremony. He dressed [...]

The picnic gene, it's clearly in the X chromosome because we women, we loooove to eat outside, and those men, well, not so much. Give us a sunny patio, a rooftop view, a shady spot beneath a tree, any day, any evening, we're in the mood for an outdoor experience. "This is what I wish for you this summer. That you might find a free afternoon in the midst of your busy life and a small patch of grass—be it a [...]

First off, kudos to Skip*Hop and Scott Henderson: the awesome Splash Bottle Rack won a Bronze in the Home Living category of the 2008 Industrial Designers Society of America's IDEA Awards. Besides being extremely practical, I love the way the Splash's obviously beautiful design gets totally obliterated in real life. What looks like a pristine sculpture at the baby shower turns out to be a jumbled explosion of bottles and nipples and doodads on the counter. In this duality, the Splash [...]

Just in time for the weekend, here's some news you can use--to help figure out how you're doing, parenting-wise: First up, the big news for parents of kids born in 2007: The CDC has released the provisional numbers, and your kid's chances of getting into Harvard could not be worse. A record 4.3 million births last year. On the bright side, at least 2.15 million of those kids are already hooked on Baby Einstein. So maybe Oberlin. [cdc.gov] Or maybe Bard? [...]

After a hotly contested court case between huge toy conglomerate Mattel and MGA Entertainment, it looks like Mattel might actually be given back profits and the intellectual property that comprises the entire Bratz line. Here's the thing though: I hate the entire concept behind the Bratz toys and am frankly aghast that any parents buy it. Please continue reading Hey Mattel! Filed under: Preschoolers, Kids 5-7, Kids 8-11, SleepAfter a bedtime routine of bath, brushing teeth, and book reading, my daughters still often resist settling in under getting under the covers and settling in for the night. So we started a new routine where, once they are tucked in and quiet, we turn off all the lights and I read them a few pages from a chapter book (with my booklight). Not only does this give them incentive to get settled into [...]

Filed under: Newborns, Babies, Weird but trueIf you have ever seen a Reborn baby doll, then you know that they look for all the world like real babies. Reborns are popular with doll collectors as well as those who can't or don't want to have actual children. Some of these dolls come complete with beating hearts and an apparatus that makes them appear to breathe. Some of them, however, just lie there looking like real babies who aren't breathing. Like the [...]

Filed under: Just for moms, Just for dads, Alcohol & drugsWe've all seen it -- a child says something wildly inappropriate and shocks the adults around her. Her parents shake their heads, "We don't know where she gets this stuff." It's happened to me, and because my kids spend nearly all day, every day with me alone, I can't look much farther than my own behavior. I think that most, if not all, parents slip now and then -- a curse [...]

I am getting old. No, let me rephrase that. I am old. Not Methuselah-old mind you, but I'm pretty sure I have the same aches and pains he did. I know I've said this/written this/thought this on many other occasions, so I apologize ahead of time for boring you once again with my "Woe is I" crap. There have just been a few instances over the past few weeks that have brought it all home for me. #1 - When Crushes [...]

Earlier today, I participated in a panel discussion at BlogHer on Mommyblogging: Public Parenting and Privacy. The other panelists were Chris Jordan, of Notes From the Trenches; Crystal, of Boobs, Injuries and Dr. Pepper; Shina Tanaka, of Maya's Mom. Our moderator was Shireen Mitchell. I won't try to summarize the entire panel discussion; as with all the BlogHer conference sessions, it's being live-blogged in great detail here. But because it's a topic that is of profound and personal interest to mombloggers, [...]

The day has only so many hours. We can only do so much. And there is so much in every day that we cannot change, cannot impact, no matter what we do. Yet, if you are like me, you can find many occasions in a day when you allow your spirit to be troubled and chaotic about something you cannot control. We waste our spirit's true energy, squandering it on the worthless worries in our lives. Take traffic. You are stuck [...]

Most people who know me realize that, notwithstanding my recent crisis of political faith, I will not be voting for John McCain in November. But as an adoptive mother I have a soft spot in my heart for the McCain family since they are an adoptive family, too. That soft spot hardened up a bit when Karl Rove and his henchmen (allegedly) started some push-polling in 2000 about what voters would think if they found out that McCain had fathered a black [...]

Hot car seats. Ugh. Liz has a fantastic tip for keeping them relatively cool during hot summer days: A friend of ours has a great hack to keep their kids' car seats cooler in hot Las Vegas -- they cover up the seats with an inexpensive reflective emergency blanket (the silver ones). The seats stay noticeably cooler, even when it's 110 degrees in the shade! Related: Pop-up winshield sunshade keeps car seat cool Seat Chiller keeps hot carseats cool
